How To Order and Install a Steel Door
Remove any interior trim to expose the old door frame. Measure the width and height of the old door frame. Next measure the width and height of the outside of the brickmold of the old door. Measure the jamb depth of the old door (usually 4 9/16 or 6 9/16).
Take these measurements to the door dealer and order a new door as close to but not larger than your measurements.
When you get your new door check the size against your old door and if all is ok you are ready to install.
Remove the old door and frame and clean the opening of all debris to get it ready for the new door.
Run two beads of silicone caulk on the subfloor for the new door to sit on. From the outside place the bottom of the new door into the opening at a 45 degree angle and pivot it into place so the bottom sill sits firmly on the silicone.
Center the door in the opening and shim tightly at bottom and screw into place at the shims.
Shim the rest of the door and open and close the door to make sure it works properly. When you are satisfied that it works well screw the frame at the shim points.
You can now insulate with fiberglass or a low expansion foam. If using foam let it sit for one hour before installing interior trim.
